황창규 KT 회장, 인공지능 · 블록체인도 ‘열일

황창규 KT 회장(사진)이 차세대 핵심 기술로 각광받는 인공지능(AI)과 블록체인 기술개발 및 서비스 활성화에 박차를 가하고 있다.

앞서 황 회장은 올해 인공지능·블록체인에 더욱 집중할 것을 표명, 관련 사업 활성화를 위한 대대적 사업부 개편 및 서비스 개발에 집중하고 있다.

지난 1월 신년사에서 황 회장은 “2018년은 인공지능, 블록체인 등에서 구체적인 성과를 만드는 해가 될 것이다”며 신산업 발굴에 대한 의중을 확실히 내비쳤다.

물론 5G 장비선정, 네트워크 구축 등 내년 3월 5세대 이동통신 상용화 준비에도 여념 없지만 인공지능과 블록체인에도 집중하겠다는 의지를 공공연히 드러낸 만큼 어느 것 하나에도 소홀하지 않는 모습이다.

◇ AI·블록체인 조직개편…인력 양성에도 적극

지난해 말 진행된 KT 조직 및 인사 개편에는 신성장 동력 확보와 미래 산업에 대한 과감한 투자 기조가 확실히 강했다.

성장 한계에 직면한 전통적인 통신사업을 벗어나 미래 경쟁력에 집중하겠는 황 회장의 의중이 여실히 반영된 듯하다.

이날 조직개편에서 KT는 지난해 5월 인공지능 서비스 발굴 및 생태계 조성을 위해 출범한 기가지니사업단을 ‘AI사업단’으로 확대·재편했다.

뿐만 아니라 인공지능 기술 개발, 전문인력 육성 기관인 AI테크센터는 융합기술원장 직속 조직으로 편제했다. 이는 기가지니에 국한됐던 AI 사업을 다른 분야로 확대한다는 의미를 담고 있다.

KT는 블록체인 전담조직도 신설했다. 이를 통해 KT는 금융거래와 밀접한 융합기술원장 직속 조직으로 출범하는 블록체인 센터는 블록체인의 선도적 기술 확보 및 사업모델을 구체화한다는 계획이다.

KT는 관련 사업 인력 양성에도 박차를 가하고 있다. KT는 기업에 필요한 실무형 인공지능 인재 배출을 위해 관련 분야 취업 희망자를 대상으로 지난 2월 26일부터 이달 초까지 ‘KT AI 아카데미’를 진행하고 있다.

AI 아카데미는 KT와 교육부가 지난 1월 체결한 AI 분야 한국형 나노디그리(nano degree·단기 교육과정 인증제도) 업무협약의 결과물이다.

이론 과정에는 머신러닝, 데이터, 인공지능 분야의 국내 석학들이 특별 강사로 참여한다. 케이스 스터디 과정에서는 KT의 인공지능 기술이 실제 사업에 적용된 사례를 배우고, 주 1회 인공지능 관련 기업을 탐방한다. 교육비는 무료다. KT는 전체 과정을 수료한 교육생에게 관련 기업의 취업을 지원할 방침이다.

인재 채용에도 적극적이다. 지난 3월 상반기 채용에서 KT는 5G, 인공지능, 블록체인, 커넥티드카, 양자통신 등 R&D 융합기술 분야의 채용을 대폭 확대했다. 이에 따라 오는 하반기도 관련 인재의 대규모 채용이 이뤄질지 관심사로 떠오른다.

◇ 인공지능 관련 제품 및 서비스 선봬

최근 KT는 자사 인공지능 기술을 접목한 관련 서비스도 우후죽순 쏟아내고 있다.

지난달 3일 KT는 노보텔 앰배서더 동대문에 국내 최초 AI 호텔 ‘기가지니 호텔’을 선보였다. 이 호텔에는 국내 최초로 KT의 인공지능 기술이 적용된 것이 특징이다.

기가지니 호텔은 음성인식뿐 아니라 터치스크린까지 갖춰 객실에서 쉽고 빠르게 호텔의 다양한 서비스를 이용할 수 있다. 음성과 터치로 조명 및 냉난방 제어, 객실 비품 신청, 호텔 시설정보 확인은 물론 TV 제어 및 음악감상도 가능하다.

또한 객실에서 이용금액 확인, 체크아웃을 진행하는 기능도 조만간 제공할 예정이다. 집안에서 편리하게 음성으로 차량을 제어할 수 있는 ‘홈투카(Home to Car)’ 서비스도 눈길을 끈다.

홈투카는 KT 기가지니의 음성인식 기능과 인공지능 기술이 현대·기아차의 커넥티드카 기술이 접목된 서비스다. 간단한 음성 명령으로 원격 온도 설정, 문잠금, 비상등·경적 켜기, 전기차 충전(전기차 모델 대상) 등 기본적인 차량기능을 제어할 수 있다.

홈투카 서비스는 7월 출시된 기아자동차의 ‘스포티지 더 볼드’와 이달 7일 출시 예정인 현대자동차의 ‘투싼 페이스리프트’에서 이용 가능하며, 향후 진행되는 현대자동차, 기아자동차의 정기 업그레이드를 통해 타 차종에도 확대 적용될 계획이다.

◇ KT, 세계 최초 ‘네트워크 블록체인’ 공개

최근 KT는 세계 최초로 상용망에 블록체인 기술을 적용한 ‘네트워크 블록체인’을 공개했다. 네트워크 블록체인은 자체 개발한 블록체인 알고리즘을 KT 자사 네트워크 망에 결합한 플랫폼이다.

기존 퍼블릭 블록체인은 처리속도와 용량이 작아 사업화에는 부적합했다. 프라이빗 블록체인도 비공개 데이터 관리로 투명성이 낮고 소규모 구조로 보안에 한계가 있었다.

그러나 KT 네트워크 블록체인은 전국에 위치한 초고속 네트워크에 블록체인을 결합한 노드를 구축해 운영하는 방식으로 성능과 신뢰라는 두 가지 장점을 갖게 된 것이 특징이다.

더불어 KT는 블록체인 기술을 기존 인터넷 서비스에도 적용해, IP가 아닌 고유 ID기반의 네트워킹을 통해 연결과 동시에 바로 본인인증이 가능한 블록체인 기반 인터넷 기술을 처음으로 공개했다.

이를 사용하면 블록체인 고유 ID가 모든 연결에 대한 인증을 대신 제공할 수 있고, IP를 네트워크 단에서부터 숨길 수 있기 때문에 기존 IP 인터넷에서의 해킹과 개인정보 도용, DDos(분산서비스공격)와 같은 공격을 원천적으로 차단할 수 있다.

특히, 최근 IP기반 웹캠 해킹으로 원격에서 집안을 훔쳐보고 동영상 거래 사이트에 해당 영상을 유통시키는 등 IoT 해킹 범죄가 증가하고 있지만, KT 블록체인 기반 인터넷 고객은 보안걱정 없이 안심하고 IoT 제품을 사용할 수 있어 전반적 IoT산업 활성화도 기대된다.

KT는 블록체인을 AI와 5G 등 KT의 5대 플랫폼과 유무선 네트워크에 적용해 국가전체에 활용될 수 있는 블록체인 인프라와 플랫폼을 구축한다는 계획이다.

김형욱 KT 플랫폼사업기획실장은 “KT는 글로벌 최고 수준의 ICT 기술을 기반으로 혁신적인 블록체인 사업을 추진하겠다”며, “앞으로도 KT는 블록체인 기반 4차 산업혁명을 선도하여 국가 산업발전과 국민생활에 기여할 것”이라고 말했다.
